Who are we?
Capital Wines is a small wine company, within the Canberra wine district. It is owned by Mark and Jennie Mooney (of The Royal Hotel Gundaroo, and the award winning GRAZING restaurant) and Andrew and Marion McEwin (of Kyeema Wines). Capital Wines purchased the established Kyeema Wine Business and related contract wine making business in mid 2008.
Capital Wines is focused on producing ultra premium Canberra region wines. We are currently expanding the 150 tonne winery, located at Murrumbateman. We also contract make for 17 other wine labels from the region, Young, Gundagai and the South Coast.
Our winemaker is Andrew McEwin. He is the great, great grandson of George McEwin, one of the first men to plant vines in the Adelaide Hills in the 1840s. George McEwin sold his Glen Ewin Shiraz for 16 shillings per case. Andrew originally hails from McLaren Vale and is a highly respected winemaker amongst his peers. Andrew is a Director and foundation judge of Winewise. Andrew is the District’s quiet achiever.
The Rest of us
Our vineyard manager and sales manager are Mark and Jennie Mooney. They are the owners of the historic Royal Hotel in Gundaroo NSW. In 2003, they restored the 1830s landmark national trust property and established GRAZING restaurant. GRAZING recently won the 2007 Australian Tourism Award and in the 2009 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, is described as “a model country restaurant”. Both Mark and Jennie are experienced vignerons, having established a premium vineyard in 1998 and having studied viticulture at Northern Melbourne Institute and Charles Sturt University. Jennie is a certified sommelier, with the Court of Master Sommeliers.
Marion McEwin works really hard behind the scenes to keep our business running smoothly. Marion is passionate about the winery (well she needs to be – Andrew has been known in the past to steal any known vessel from the house to get through a vintage!) Marion also has wonderful patience – a much needed skill in a small wine business.
The Kyeema vineyard produces exceptional quality fruit and is one of a small hand full of Canberra vineyards to produce old vine shiraz. It has the enviable reputation of vines that are an old Penfold’s clone. The combination of age and clone make them unique within the region.
In the past, the vineyard has set record prices for fruit within the district. Most of the vineyard was under contract to Hardys until 2006, and past vintages of the chardonnay have gone into ‘The Eileen Hardy’ and the 2005 wine made with our shiraz fruit was judged off for the Jimmy Watson trophy. The vineyard is located at Murrumbateman on a granite belt that runs on the eastern side of the Barton Highway. Only a small handful of vineyards within the region, sit on this type of granite profile.
Capital Wines produces three labels.
Our highly sought after single vineyard range features wines crafted to express their sense of place. The “Kyeema Wines” label has won 46 trophies since 1995. “Kyeema Vineyard” is our reserve shiraz and merlot. It is produced from estate grown fruit.
Our core range is "The Ministry Series" – which makes an irreverent commentary on our location near the political hub of Canberra. These quirky, catchy labels are designed by leading Adelaide, wine designer Karin Seya.
Our third label "The Press Gallery" provides exceptional value for money.
