The Vineyard Dragons

The Kyeema Vineyard has a large colony of bearded dragons living amongst the grapevines. Is this a sign of the balance and health of our vineyard? Well we like to think so.

In the mornings, the dragons hang on the Eastern side of the vine trunks and sun their backs. As the day warms up, they climb up into the shade of the grapevine canopy. They camouflage themselves very well. They turn yellow amongst yellow leaves and even turn blue when there is blue fruit hanging on the vines. They can give vineyard workers quite a fright, especially when they put their hand on one!

We know they eat a mixture of plants and animals and no doubt help keep vineyard pests to a minimum. We can’t see any evidence of them eating the grapevines. They lay eggs about this time of year. They dig holes, lay eggs and bury them and then Mark, our Vineyard Manager goes around placing milk crates over the nests to protect them from tractors and other vineyard vehicles. The eggs hatch in march.

The vineyard dragons confirm what a special place we have here at the Kyeema Vineyard.
