Tri-nations TROPHY for our merlot
It is with great pleasure that we announce that Capital Wines ‘The Backbencher’ merlot has won the Trophy for merlot, representing Australia in the tri-nations wine challenge. Our stunning (but more restrained because it is made for time) Kyeema Vineyard Reserve Merlot also gaining a gold medal at the event.
‘The Backbencher’ merlot is made with fruit from our renowned Kyeema Vineyard and also a small amount of fruit from local growers. Winemaker Andrew McEwin has had outstanding results with merlot. This will be the 14th trophy for merlot since 1995.
This prestigious event, is judged by Bob Campbell, Michael Fridjhon and Huon Hooke. Some months prior to the judging, the judges select wines to represent their country.
Capital Wines was invited to enter the Kyeema Vineyard Reserve Shiraz 2008, The Kyeema Vineyard Reserve Merlot 2008, 'The Backbencher' Merlot 2008, 'The Ambassador' Tempranillo 2008 and 'The Treasury' Late picked riesling 2009. Unfortunately the highly rated (95/100 James Halliday & author's choice in Gary Walsh and Campbell Mattinson's Big Red Wine Book) Kyeema Vineyard shiraz was sold out and unable to enter the competition.
This is an outstanding coup for a small winery.
