Our stunning 2011 riesling has won a spot in the Top 40 NSW Wines. Full results of the NSW Wine awards will be posted later.
2011 was a cool vintage in the Canberra district and a great vintage for our whites. This is our third vintage of riesling. Both the 09 & 10 were 5-STAR Halliday Wines (94/100).
The 2011 'The Whip' comes from two vineyards in Murrumbateman and is mainly Geisenheim clone riesling with about 1/3 Pewsey clone. We took a massive risk (with disease conditions around) by leaving the fruit on a good two weeks after other wineries had taken their fruit in from the growers. It meant careful hand selection of fruit at picking time. Have a look at the video below!
Typical of Canberra riesling, it has a beautifully delicate floral nose with hints of white flowers and citrus. On the palate there are hints of green apples, citrus blossoms and sherbet minerality. The natural acidity carries the lime citrus into a long finish. This is a riesling that is very pure and delicate yet it has superb power with its focused line and length. This wine will cellar beautifully and although a great wine to try young is built for age.
